well I just um... I have a personal interest. and that's children um (.) up until about (.) first grade. [laughs] no I love children otherwise. but my preference is (.) preschool children. I did that for almost thirty years. [nods] [m:...] and um I laɪd eyes on my kids at that age. and I did love working with the children too. [nods] [mhm.] and so yeah. [did you work in tuscon?] mhm. [nods] [where did you work?] [REDACTED]. [oh okay.] and um it's (.) a small kindergarten and preschool um out east (.) Tuscon. [okay uhuh.] and it's at my church (.) actually. [hm...] and um we have two year olds three year olds four year olds (.) and kindergarten out there. so... [mhm.] but... I did love that program. (..) [appears to be in attempt at making sound] x I love that age. [uhuh.] mhm. [uhuh that's great.] yeah. [that's great.] [what were some of your favorite activities to do with preschoolers?] oh gosh. well you know it's funny. because I really don't like sɪən- necessarily to learn it. [mhm.] but I love teaching science to kids. [mhm.] cause you can teach it... it's so fun. it's so hands on at that age. [uhuh uhuh.] and so everything becomes (.) um (..) fun. [nods] you know? it's fun for the kids too. they look at a seed. and you put it in a bag with um (.) a wet paper towel. and you hang it up in the window. in a few days it sprouts. and they're like amazed. you know? [oh wow.] and little things like that. or you (.) get a little frog and have a frog in a little bowl in your room or something. and they just watch that forever. [uhuh.] and we can learn so much about that. especially (.) the older four year olds. they are just love (.) learning information. they're just like little sieves. and they just soak it up. [shrugs shoulders] so... [mhm.] yeah. [it's true.] so I love... and I love to read to kids. [m:...] yeah. [nods] [mhm.] yeah. I lost that ability (.) to r- (.) hm... (..) well I didn't lose the ability to read. but I lost the ability to (..) be spontaneous when I was reading. I know that sounds silly. but you can read. and then you ask questions. and you get kids to really thinking about what's going on. and I don't have that ability to do that anymore. cause the words don't come out like I want əm to. [mhm.] yeah. and the thoughts. [mhm.] so I lost that real ability to do that. I just love it. [mhm.] so (.) we always read at least one book a day if not two. [nods] [m:...] yeah yeah. [mhm.] so I... just that age they just wanna know everything. [laughs] [yes yes.] [what do you enjoy doing now a days with your free time?] well (.) the gal I live with... um she and I (.) were actually... we worked together at the school. well she was the director. and I was a teacher. and we became really good friends (.) through the years. and um (..) when I had my stroke then I went to live with them. because (.) my son and daughter didn't have room at their house. and they lived (.) out quite a ways. um so I went to live with donna. and (.) when I was with her... and what did you say now? [laughs] and what'd you ask me? [what you enjoy...] [this is perfect though.] yeah. [this is great.] um s- so um after we both retired uh s- she worked for a while (.) longer. and I worked with her at the school (.) at a volunteer basis. cause x x still lots of stuff I could do. um (..) we started teaching um vacation bible school at church (.) and sunday school at church. and we ran the sunday school program for three years. and now were just teaching. [uhuh.] and so we do that. and I (.) um help out at (.) fabby herse's (.) um (.) aphasia (.) group. [mhm.] um I also take (.) um therapeutic (.) horse riding. [m:...] um that's real close to my house. so that works out nice. and let's see. what else do I do? mostly exercise. [mhm.] myself. [mhm.] um (..) and we take care of... um (.) donna's daughter is disabled. she's forty years old. [okay.] so (.) she hæ- has her own place to live. but she needs a lot of help with um a lot of things. [mhm.] so we take care of her too. so we're just kind of (.) do those kinds of things. [yeah.] yeah. [that's a busy...] keeps us busy. [mhm.] [it sounds like it.] and then we just did the rummage sale. [uhuh uhuh.] ah that's a big thing. [yeah.] but fun. [uhuh.] [well it sounds like you're definitely busy and um havin' fun.] yeah. [it sounds like.] yeah. we don't just sit around.
